Oct. 12, 2011- SwimMAC Carolina and Team Elite will hold their third annual Medalist Club Luncheon on Oct. 21 at the Hilton Charlotte Center City from 11:45-1:15pm. The event will be emceed by one of their own, two-time gold medalist Melvin “Gold Medal Mel” Stewart.
“This event is very important for Team Elite’s training and success,” said SwimMAC CEO and Team Elite Head Coach David Marsh. “The luncheon is a great way for members of our Charlotte community to get to meet the athletes of Team Elite and learn about the intense year they have coming up as they prepare for the 2012 Olympic Trials.”
Marsh has created a USA Swimming Center of Excellence here in Charlotte with Team Elite. Some of the sports’ biggest up-and-comers are cutting their teeth with the two-time Olympic coach.
The athletes join Team Elite for one goal, to win an Olympic medal, and SwimMAC has produced five Olympic swimmers who have collected six gold medals.
This year Team Elite hopes to up the ante and add a few more gold medals to the display case.
“We have an immense amount of talent on this team,” Marsh commented, “with hard work, a desire to win, and the support from our Charlotte community the athletes chances to make the Team USA 2012 Summer Olympic Games becomes more and more of a reality.”
While Marsh knows the technical training side, he hopes the annual luncheon will draw out the community and get them excited about what it taking place here in Charlotte, “Team Elite could be anywhere, but Charlotte is the place to be. The community always supports SwimMAC around the Charlotte UltraSwim that we host and now they have a chance to support these athletes for the next 10 months in their quest for Olympic gold medals.”
Stewart can speak eloquently on what it takes to win gold medals; he represented the United States at both the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games winning two Gold Medals as well as a Bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The Gastonia, N.C. native competed for SwimMAC from 1985-1992 and went on to attend the University of Tennessee where he was a two-time NCAA Champion and NCAA and World Record holder in the 200 butterfly.
